Test of tolerance

We Indians miss no opportunity to boast off and ride high on being the largest Democracy of the world. Although it is debatable whether the brighter side of the Democracy is upfront or we are subjected to the negatives of the Democracy and its norms yet it is an upbeat feeling of pride that we dwell in a democratic set up. Debates, discussions and one’s right to express his or her feelings and emotions in this democratic set up sometimes take monstrous shape and magnitude leading to agitations and demonstrations which are hued in various political, religious and other sectarian factors. The entire country witnessed during the last couple of days, the think tank of the country from Parliament House to the media chat room to the open public platforms busying itself to prove one point or the other, cursing and downgrading others in the process of deciding whether we are a tolerant society or not. But all such discussions ended up in mere blame game where no point is proved, no le...

But, for the Butts

Certain subtle and elegant looking gaps and distances creep in a very natural way as for as relationships in Indian society are concerned. Such regards and differences based on elder-younger parameters are supposed to be honored and maintained to further aromatize such relations. Relations on elder and younger parameters blossom despite maintaining and honoring these formal gaps.   Although I have always been against these distances, perhaps because I have never been subjected to such formalities and protocols in my family yet fear of falling in the eyes of a person who rises above such formalities and is friendly despite age gap, is a unique one which restricts and guides me in testing times. Carrying the traditions in the family, I have also developed a unique, friendly and open relationship with my son.   This friendly ‘aura’ is not limited to him only; it has naturally got extended to his friends too. His friends (A group of 12) used to call me at regular interval...

National Anthem from ‘Oh’ to ‘Ahaa’

National Flag and Anthem possess the unique power to ignite the nationalist feelings and spirits in any one but it has been painfully seen and experienced that our National Anthem is slowly fading away as schools and colleges have failed to include them in their daily routine. How shameful it is to find that the youth of today cannot recite the full text of our National Anthem. It is only on Independence and Republic day that we witness the tricolour being hoisted and National Anthem being sung.  On my visit to Mumbai last year, I very pleasantly found the National Anthem being played at the start of movie in the PVRs and everyone getting on feet on their own as a mark of respect. Such simple looking measures and steps undoubtedly leave subtle yet longer lasting impact on one’s character and psychology.  The youth of today who have to shoulder the responsibility of carrying our country forward should sensitize themselves towards such things and initiate measures so tha...

The soulful touch

It is rightly said that ‘They never fall who have fear of falling in their own eyes’. The fear of falling in one’s own eyes can act as the most formidable deterrent in guiding and navigating the human behavior. But the need is to properly nurture such fear in one’s conscience and give due space to such moral policing in purifying one’s body and soul. Souls need to be stirred at times. Such soul stirring can be provided by any casual incident or episode, or by any ordinary human being. Such genuine stirring of the soul can purify one’s character and make any person, a true human being. I got a chance to visit Goa on a pleasure trip during this winter break.   After enjoying complete leisure and fun I boarded the flight back to New Delhi. With all the excitement of returning home after a full week and ecstasy of those fun filled moments in my heart I took my seat. A couple of rows in front of me, three youths in their early twenties were seated. They all appeared Punjabis fr...
